Cranbrook is proud to be the home of the Canadian Museum of Rail Travel.
The Museum is home to the only remaining set of passenger rail cars from
Canadian Pacific's 1929 Trans Canada Limited as well as other elaborately
restored passenger cars. Open year round, stop in for a guided tour and
enjoy the railway gift shop and the Canadian Museum of Rail Travel Cafe.
Fort Steele
Heritage Town , a British Columbia Heritage Site, is located 10 minutes
north of Cranbrook on Highways 93/95. Over 60 restored buildings and homes
are on site including a working bakery, print shop, general store and
steam train. Take a horse drawn wagon ride featuring Fort Steele's famous
Clydesdale horses or enjoy the musical variety show at the Wild Horse
Theatre. Fort Steele is open year round but summer is the best time to
visit when all programs are in full swing. Be sure to catch the Harvest
Festival, always the third weekend in August.
The Kootenay
Trout Hatchery is responsible for stocking over 200 lakes in the Cranbrook
region every year. This adds up to over 3 million fry annually! Guided
tours are fun for the whole family and are available year round. Located
east of Cranbrook on the Fort Steele / Wardner Road, it is a short, scenic
drive from Fort Steele.
St. Eugene Mission is the oldest and largest historical structure in southeastern
British Columbia. The Ktunaxa/Kinbasket Tribal Council is developing this
site into a world class resort complex so be prepared for construction.
Pay particular attention to the 1897 Gothic style church which features
hand painted stained glass.
Take a stroll
around downtown Cranbrook with our self guided Heritage Walking tour.
Over 30 buildings are included on the tour; pick up a map at the Canadian
Museum of Rail Travel or either of the Cranbrook Visitor Information Centers.
Splash Zone
Water Slides is the perfect place for kids on a hot summer day. With batting
cages, a wading pool, hot tub, video arcade and concession stand Splash
Zone has plenty to entertain the whole family. Cranbrook also offers two
mini golf courses, a go cart track and the Armond Twin Cinemas.
During the
summer months visit Raptor Rescue and Rehabilitation Society which offers
interpretive programs using live hawks, falcons, owls and eagles. Or take
in local examples of wildlife at Aasland Museum and Taxidermy where visitors
can see a taxidermist at work.
